Abstract

This research addresses the phenomenon of urban sprawl over green areas in the city of Baghdad، with a focus on the Al-Shamasiya neighborhood as a case study for examining this issue. The research highlights the primary causes behind urban sprawl، including population growth and the absence of effective urban planning. It also discusses the negative environmental impacts resulting from this phenomenon.

Previous studies indicate that Baghdad has lost approximately 30% of its green spaces over the past two decades، with the Al-Shamasiya neighborhood losing more than 15% of its green lands in the last ten years. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach، relying on data from previous studies.

The study reveals that the main drivers of urban sprawl in Al-Shamasiya include increased demand for housing units، weak environmental regulations، and a lack of government oversight. The environmental impacts of this sprawl are reflected in rising pollution levels، a shortage of recreational spaces، and changes in the local climate pattern.

The research concludes by presenting recommendations to address this issue، such as promoting sustainable urban planning، enforcing strict regulations to protect green areas، and raising environmental awareness among residents. The study also calls for the development of afforestation projects and the establishment of public parks to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.
