Abstract

The verse clarifies that a vain oath is an oath sworn unintentionally, such as saying "No, by God" instead of "Yes, by God," due to a slip of the tongue. God Almighty explains in this blessed verse that He does not hold one accountable for a vain oath, but He does hold one accountable for oaths made firmly in the heart. The expiation for this type of oath, when broken, is as follows, according to


Or clothing them.


Or freeing a slave                                                                              .


If one is unable to do so, then one must fast for three consecutive days. This is the opinion of most commentators and jurists.


This noble verse urges the Muslim to safeguard his oath from breaking it. The Holy Quran clarifies the purpose of legislating expiation so that the Muslim does not fall into hardship and commit sin by breaking his oath, and so that he thanks God by adhering to what He has prescribed in this noble verse.This research attempted to uncover some of the opinions mentioned by some interpreters and jurists regarding the verse that spoke about the ruling on expiation for an oath in the Holy Qur’an.
