Although he did not hold any official position in the Russian Church, he was described as a spiritual healer and had the ability to heal others, as he was famous for. Due to his many relationships with women, he was able to get close to the royal Russian Romanov family and mix with the aristocracy in St. Petersburg.

He is considered one of the most prominent figures who sparked controversy in Russian history. Although he was a simple, illiterate, and uneducated peasant, he became revered among many peasants.
