The Artistic Structure of Poetic Imagery In The Diwan of Ibn Al-Sabbagh Al-Judhami: An Analytical Study

Abstract

This research, titled "The Artistic structure of poetic Image in Diwan of Ibn al-Sabbagh al-Judhami: An Analytical Study", seeks to uncover the uniqueness of Ibn al-Sabbagh’s poetic construction by examining the poetic image as a central nucleus in the structure of poetic expression and as a mirror reflecting the poet’s emotional and intellectual experience.

The study adopts a rhetorical and artistic approach that addresses the image on two complementary levels:

The first is the artistic structure of the image, where the elements contributing to the shaping of the poetic scene are analyzed—such as sensory and symbolic imagination, metaphor, simile, and metonymy—alongside rhythm, which is treated not merely as a sonic framework, but as a supportive tool for poetic visualization.

The second axis explores the aesthetic and interpretive dimensions of the image, focusing on its symbolic, philosophical, and spiritual connotations, which render it open to interpretation and infused with esoteric meanings drawn from the Sufi and philosophical lexicon.

The study reveals that the image in Ibn al-Sabbagh’s poetry constitutes an organic structure that expresses an inner vision open to existence, and that carries within it the tension of the lover, the anxiety of the seeker, and the transparency of the mystic. It also shows that his use of rhetoric is not a mere repetition of tradition, but a renewed articulation of meaning through layered images rich with vitality and interpretive depth
