Abstract

Variables in life in general, and theater in particular, are subject to contemporary standards, its social and economic fluctuations, and their problems, as well as technological variables that contribute to a different interpretation of problems, in keeping with the nature of newly discovered technologies. Topology here represents a scientific framework for dealing with spatial variables in a theatrical performance, as a flexible architecture capable of employing theatrical elements according to directorial visions.

The variables of furnishing the spatial structure in a theatrical performance are subject to artistic, technical, aesthetic, and intellectual considerations. They constitute a fundamental pillar in determining the visual patterns of a theatrical performance, and they are also in harmony with the auditory and emotional systems related to the feelings and psychological aspects of the character, the place, and the space of the theatrical performance. The researcher found that among the problems facing both the scenographer and the director are determining the structure of the place and its dramatic space, and how the performance's vocabulary or structural elements are formed within that space. She also found that topology has the potential to be an important element in constructing visual systems that spatially transform a subject or event into a visual chain that produces the visual image. Hence, the researcher chose to address the question of her research: What is the nature of topology and its impact on the variables of the spatial structure in a theatrical performance? This is achieved by examining the performance elements and the impact of topology on them, especially space after the wider space, in presenting the form and content of the theatrical performance.
