Abstract

This study aims to reveal the semiotic structure of aesthetic formation in the artworks produced by students of the College of Fine Arts, through employing a semiotic approach to interpret the artwork as a visual text that generates meaning. The study is based on the assumption that aesthetic composition is not merely an arrangement of visual elements, but a network of visual relationships that function as meaningful signs guiding interpretation. The research adopted a descriptive-analytical method with a semiotic orientation. A semiotic analysis form of aesthetic formation was designed as the main tool to examine four interconnected levels: formal elements, structural relationships, visual signs, and aesthetic significance. The research sample consisted of three intentionally selected student artworks characterized by rich compositional structures.

The findings indicated that the relationships between elements (position, direction, size, density, center, margin) play a greater semantic role than the elements themselves. The aesthetic composition directs the viewer’s eye through intentional visual paths that produce social, cultural, cognitive, and spiritual meanings. The study also demonstrated the effectiveness of the analysis tool in moving from formal description to deep semantic interpretation. The study concluded that aesthetic formation in educational artworks represents a meaningful structure suitable for semiotic analysis, and recommended adopting this approach in analyzing and evaluating students’ artworks in fine arts education.
