Repetition Strategies in Trump’s 2024 Announcement Speech: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract
Using critical discourse analysis approach, this study attempts to uncover the ideological and rhetorical function of repetition strategies in Donald Trump 2024 campaign speech. The analysis relies on a text corpus of sampling speech segments that have been selected according to the degree of repetition patterns (e.g., introductory repetition, syntactical parallelisms and lexical repetition). The pattern of the analysis is deductive and integrative, integrating Faircloughthree-dimensional model and Van Dijk socio-cognitive approach and evaluative theory. The findings are revealing: the use of repetition is a formal linguistic device, not just a stylistic device. It goes to serve the development of an "us versus them" binary and strengthens positive self-presentation positively versus negatively presenting the other.
