Abstract

This research examines the Speicher massacre from a geopolitical perspective, focusing on the role of place in shaping the event and directing its symbolic and sectarian messages. The city of Tikrit, with its historical symbolism and important strategic location, has transformed from a geographical space into a tool for political conflict in the post-Iraqi state era. The research is based on the hypothesis that geography was not merely the background to the massacre. Rather, it is an effective element in reproducing symbolic hegemony and instilling psychological trauma in the souls of Iraqis, as well as consolidating societal divisions. By analyzing the structure of the place and local actors, the research seeks to explain how geographical location turns into a mechanism for control and conflict, and the ways that led to the massacre, in addition to its geopolitical effects.
