Abstract

This research represents an exploration of the history of interior design which unearths the evolution of surface decoration to a discipline that encompasses art, science and technology to mediate human comfort and well-being. The important distinction now is that contemporary interior design is about more than how space 'looks', it is about how people 'feel' in a space. The interventions produce spaces individualized to foster comfort, peace and decreased stress levels, while combining sustainable, functional and aesthetically pleasing perspectives regarding the efficient use of space. A key aspect of this study has provided insight that sustainable design practices provide healthy and environmentally friendly spaces that utilize green materials and natural light. This study also examines how disruptive and innovative technologies including virtual reality, digital fabrication via 3D printing, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things will alter interior spaces to become smart, personalized and adaptable places. Finally, it examines the relationships between aesthetic modalities and technological developments to fundamentally re-interpret contemporary architectural historical standards of aesthetics, usability and cultural identity. This study indicates that interior design is a subsidiary or part of architecture and is increasingly part of the contemporary context of living. Interior design creates environments that connect innovation, creativity and sustainability to satisfy the functional and psychological needs of people throughout the world.
