The Rich Garners of the Past and the Writer’s Novitiate: a portrait of the artist (Edith Wharton) as a young woman

Abstract

Her research focuses on American literature, with a particular emphasis on 19^th- and 20^th- century American travel literature. Her doctoral dissertation, entitled The Cruise of the Vanadis: in the footsteps of Edith Wharton, explores Edith Wharton’s 1888 travel narrative, The Cruise of the Vanadis. Wharton never thought fit to submit it to her publishers and, as a consequence, it lay in her drawers unpublished until it was rediscovered in 1992. This narrative is invaluable as it gives a clear picture of the underlying influences that nourished the vision of the future novelist.
