Abstract

This study aimed to find out (the effect of the Cosgrove model on acquiring mathematical concepts among fifth grade students). The fifth grade students at Al-Faw Elementary School for Boys were selected as a sample for research in the General Directorate of Education in Diyala Governorate, the second semester of the academic year 2220/2023. Division (B) was chosen randomly as an experimental group of (29) students, and Division (A) as a control group of (28) students. The two groups were rewarded in the variables (intelligence, chronological age, previous information in mathematics, previous achievement in mathematics, and the educational level of the parents).

A mathematical concepts acquisition test was prepared with (60) objective items of the type (multiple choice) with (20) main mathematical concepts, for each concept three items according to the levels of concept acquisition (defining the concept, distinguishing the concept, and applying the concept). It was presented to a group of arbitrators in mathematics and its teaching methods to ensure its validity. And using the Kweder Richardson equation (KR - 20), the stability of the test in its first and second parts was calculated, so the stability of the first part was (0.80) and for the second part (0.83).

In the light of the research results, I recommend teaching mathematical concepts in primary schools using the Cosgrove model and for all educational levels, as it raises the level of their acquisition of concepts, as well as holding training courses for in-service mathematics teachers to learn about the application of the Cosgrove model and how to employ it in teaching mathematics
