The Effect of Determining Meaning on Word Recall Among University Students

Abstract

The current research aimed to determine the effect of meaning determination on word recall among university students. The sample consisted of (60) male and female students, equally selected from the Psychological Counseling and Computer Science departments in the College of Basic Education, from the fourth year. The sample was divided into two groups, one experimental group and the other a control group, with (30) male and female students in each group, equally from both departments. Both groups were given a scientific article in biology containing information about animals, plants, and their environment. The article was then taken from the members of both groups after they read it for (15) minutes. Then, the meaning determination method was given to the members of the experimental group, but not to the control group. Finally, a recall test of the names of plants, animals, and their places of origin was administered to both groups.Using a two-sample t-test ,the means and standard deviations of both groups, the results showed that the experimental group's recall of plant , animal names and their locations was better than control groups. The results also showed no difference in the effect of meaning determination based on gender or academic year
