Abstract

First human being has practiced activities that have been considered as means to reach for their goals. These activities were sort of unconscious justification to fill the gap between the two worlds of obvious and non- obvious. Therefore; rituals and other practices were expressive personifications and in order to integrate them, there should be tools and other means that considered similar to the act of creation. One of the most important tools is the 'Mask' that is regarded the first way to disguise or simulate. Thus, the 'Mask' represents the second unseen character that the actor is embodying.


The actor can also use the way of coloring the face instead of using masks in order to represent a character. The face is the space of the main senses and the features can reflect the character's inside emotions and impressions. The face is one of the most significant connection tools with others when talking about transmitting and receiving messages. These that have psychological motives which in turn motivate a number of face muscles that form different kinds of responses and enthusiasm especially that the forehead and the chin are tools that help identify features of the face in respect of age, degree of cleverness and general identity.


The 'Mask' is regarded the legal representative for what is known today by Cosmetology or cosmetics or the art of disguise. Whether in theatre or in facing the camera, its basic function is to present the needed information about the basic character that the actor is playing.


In order to observe the historical progress of the mask and its role in theatre, the study comes up with four chapters.


Chapter One: the problem, the significance and the objectives of the study. Also the identification of terms that have been mentioned within the study.


Chapter Two: it included two sections:


Section one: the historical progress of the mask in theatre.


Section two: the mask and the scynography of the show.


Then, the indications of the theoretical frame.


Chapter Three: the society, limits, tools and sample of the study.


Chapter Four: illustration for the most important results.


Finally the study is concluded by a list of the resources and references, then, an abstract in English.
