Title of the Research: The Rhetorical Structure in the Poetry of Ibrahim ibn Hurma

Abstract

This research examines the rhetorical formation in the poetry of Ibrahim ibn Hurma, addressing an important aspect of poetic art represented by rhetorical embellishments and their role in highlighting meanings and strengthening the artistic effect within poetic texts. The study focuses on investigating the rhetorical features in his poetry and revealing the extent to which he employed the arts of al-Badiʿ in constructing poetic imagery and adding aesthetic value to his poetic style.

The study begins with an introductory overview of the concept of al-Badiʿ, its origins, and its development among Arab critics and rhetoricians. It then introduces the poet Ibrahim ibn Hurma, his literary life, and his poetic status during the Umayyad era, in addition to discussing the political, social, and cultural environment that influenced his poetic experience. After that, the research examines the most prominent rhetorical devices found in his poetry, such as antithesis, paronomasia, parallelism, repetition, and balanced division, along with other artistic techniques that contributed to enhancing the aesthetic value of his poetry.

The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach through tracing the rhetorical phenomena in the poet’s works and analyzing them artistically and rhetorically in order to reveal their effect on shaping poetic significance, deepening meaning, and influencing the recipient. The study concludes that Ibrahim ibn Hurma was able to employ rhetorical arts in a balanced artistic manner بعيد from affectation, which granted his poetry a distinctive aesthetic character and highlighted his artistic ability and stylistic uniqueness among the poets of his age. The study also demonstrates that rhetorical formation in his poetry was not merely verbal ornamentation, but rather an effective artistic tool for expressing poetic experience and conveying emotions and ideas in an influential and aesthetically rich style.
