Abstract

Procrastination Styles among Academically Distinguished Students

Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the level of procrastination among distinguished students, examine gender differences in procrastination patterns, and identify the relative ranking of these patterns among distinguished male and female students. To achieve these objectives, a Procrastination Patterns Scale was developed based on the model proposed by Sapadin and Maguire (1996). Following the establishment of its psychometric properties, the scale was administered to a sample of (371) distinguished students enrolled in secondary schools for distinguished students in Baghdad Iraq,  The collected data were analyzed using one-sample and independent-samples t-tests The findings revealed a statistically significant level of procrastination among the participants. Furthermore, no statistically significant gender differences were found across the six procrastination patterns, except for the Perfectionist and Anxious procrastination patterns, in which female students scored significantly higher than their male counterparts  The results also demonstrated a high degree of similarity in the ranking of procrastination patterns across genders Among male students, the patterns were ranked as follows: Perfectionist, Overdoer, Anxious, Crisis-Maker, Dreamer, and Defier Among female students, the ranking was: Perfectionist, Anxious, Overdoer, Crisis-Maker, Dreamer, and Defier. Overall, the findings suggest that procrastination among distinguished students is primarily associated with perfectionistic tendencies, performance-related concerns, and excessive task involvement rather than oppositional or defiant behaviors. Based on these findings, a number of recommendations and directions for future research are proposed.
